My friend and I like to play minecraft SMP frequently. I created a Lan World in survival on 1.8 and had my friend join. But when we decided to get a nether portal my friend stepped in first and disappeared. Then I tried to go through but couldn't. Meanwhile the nether had loading for my friend for a while until she was disconnected from the server because of a 'timeout'. Thinking my computer was having trouble with the nether portal I closed the world and then reopened it. It was laggy at first and took several closes and reopens before my world had stopped lagging. I then opened the world to Lan and my friend got on. Just when she joined everything except for myself stopped, like the sounds of cows mooing, sound of chickens, and the movement of every entity, stopped. My friend was disconnected from a timeout and we have not been able to use that world together since.

I'm afraid I personally can't reproduce any of the issues you've described.
The world for which you have provided a download works fine for me, and the Nether loads as well.
You can try resetting your Nether world by going into that world's folder and removing the DIM-1 folder.
If you can reproduce the issue you're experiencing (including the issue with the Nether), and then afterwards, attach the 'latest.log' file (located in .minecraft\logs, and it might just be called latest), it may provide other information about the issue.
I tried your proposed resolution and it did work but my friend lost all her items. At least we can still use the world. Thanks stupid3700
Unfortunately a problem has arisen from this. After deleting the DIM-1 folder I had my friend get on. Something strange was going on because my friend's skin was not rendering. When she got on she was at spawn with no items so she had to get back to where she was before where I restored her items by spawning them in. After several hours of playing we left and exited the world. When I got back on the world it was really laggy so I closed minecraft and reopened it while my friend did the same. When she got back on to the world she had her normal skin back but had the inventory that she had before she entered the nether a while back. All the items in her inventory were lost and I don't know how to restore them (because there were quite a lot). When I investigated the world file I found that there were now three files in the playerdata folder rather than the previous two, but I do not know which file belongs to which player because I do not know our individual UUIDs.
Here is a link to a download of the world in case anyone wishes to explore the file extensively: https://www.mediafire.com/?u8ldnjze5aartm0
