when powering a line of redstone from the side closest to a dust positioned to bud a piston block and a dust after the mentioned one, the piston buds upon depowering the block. this also occours when the closest dust to the power source is positioned to power the dust, while another dust is positioned to simply update the piston block

This has two causes: Because of MC-108, multiple sections of redstone can power the piston. However, the order in which they're unpowered (which depends on location, as per MC-11193) will determine whether or not they're all unpowered before the piston receives its block update. If any of the redstone powering the piston is still powered when it receives the block update, then it won't retract.
