Whenever I am in the game (and in the game only) the screen repeatedly flickers white and sometimes even makes the screen completely blank.

I'm not so sure if this is just Minecraft 1.8.4 because I tried downgrading to Minecraft 1.8.3 and the flickering problem is still present.
I only got this laptop yesterday and I'm thinking of getting a refund/replacement and see if that solves it

This also happens on two of my laptops using Intel HD Graphics Family cards. Using Ubuntu 14.10 on both with Sun Java 8 (Not OpenJDK).
Playing multiplayer. I have just tried installing the Intel Linux Graphics from https://01.org/linuxgraphics/downloads and now its black flickering. 😛
