Aren't signs supposed to stick unto the fence virtually? There's like this "space" in between the sign placed unto the fence and the fence itself. Is this some kind of visual bug?

It's not a bug, just the way the game works at this point. The sign doesn't check what block it's attaching to, it just goes into the block next to it because it can't occupy the same block as the fence post.
