When I had 45 torches in my "shield" slot, I went to a nearby lava lake to get some lava, but when I right-clicked my hopper, bam! The lava was an empty bucket. It was still an empty bucket when I exited out of the hopper's GUI. I checked the lava pool and the lava still looked like it had been taken.

Can't reproduce with any GUI block, with or without torches in the off-hand slot.
Please try again, checking that you do collect a lava bucket before opening the hopper GUI, and that you didn't miss when collecting lava.
