I would retract the redstone block with a sticky piston below it.
What actually happened was...:
The redstone block powered the air block thus powering the piston
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Place a piston facing any direction
2. Place a redstone block 2 blocks above (air block in between)

Tick Speed don't effect redstone. Only blocks that require them like grass, and plants.
Just in case this would matter I set my randomTickSpeed to 500
