Whenever you throw any lingering potion in the air, it displays the texture of a splash potion being thrown up in the air.

I was figuring out what the lingering potions did, and how to use them (great addition btw!) and I noticed that when I threw them in the air, the texture would be that of a splash potion. I was using this on a Jump Boost II (22 seconds) lingering potion.
