Version 1.8.8 client not working on Mavericks 10.9.5

I have had no issues with Minecraft for the past 18 months, and had upgraded successfully up to 1.8.6. When I tried to upgrade to 1.8.8 with the new launcher, it no longer works. The launcher downloads the latest minecraft runtime, then simply hangs with a white screen and has to be force quit.

Can you please make it possible to download the older 1.8.6 version? I can find no where safe to get it, and it's the last version I confirmed worked on Mavericks.

Thanks you very much.

Hello.

If the launcher itself is working before you click "Play", you should be able to change the settings of a launcher profile and make the launcher download MC 1.8.6.
If you look at the bottom left(MC Launcher 1.1.1 and higher), you'll see your launcher profile. By default the profile name is "(Default)". Edit the profile or create a new one and find "Use version:". Choose 1.8.6, save and let the launcher download it for you. If this doesn't work, I may not know what the problem is.

Good luck!

Unfortunately, it does NOT get that far. It never shows anything but a white screen. It's completely DOA, and I've reinstalled it many times...

And of course, when I use earlier minecraft versions, they only provide access to even earlier versions of minecraft than the one I'm after. Is there seriously no way to just download an older version like we are doing with the current version? Surely Mojang doesn't just throw older versions away...

It's funny - this is truly the first version of Minecraft I've ever had an issue with. It never occurred to me that trying the latest version could end my fun. Or that I'd never be able to access prior versions. I'm guessing that 1.8.7 might work, because 1.8.8 seems like the version with the new launcher, and that seems to be the issue.

But seriously, thank you very much for trying to help.

This is extremely depressing for me. At the same time this happened, one of my two minecraft accounts also suddenly ceased to function, and it'll probably be a month before I hear back from the account guys. My minecraft world has pretty much imploded.

OK, I've confirmed the specifics. There is an app in the download called "Minecraft Updater.app" - that works perfectly. Although unlike earlier versions of Java, i did not see specific jar files for specific versions.

The issue is the new launcher - that's what doesn't even launch. Maybe it's related to the new java files - I don't know. But it's clearly the launcher that's the issue. I have no way to tell if the current version of minecraft works unless someone knows a way I can launch it from the terminal without the official launcher - similar to the way I launch the server version.

Thanks,

Sorry - kept forgetting to mention this - it claims to be launcher version 1.6.44

It freezes up after saying:

JFX is already initialized

YES!!!! I decided to be full on brave and selected 1.8.8 in my old launcher. It works! Perfectly!

So there is no compatibility issues with Minecraft 1.8.8. It's simply that the new launcher is incompatible with OS-X Mavericks. The solution is for a person to get ahold of ANY 1.8.x Minecraft somehow, install it, and then specify the newer version of minecraft to play.

CAVEAT EMPTOR - Mojang really needs to make the launcher and Minecraft separate downloads and put specification warnings on the launcher so you know what OSes they've tested it with.

And more informational goodness. The minecraft jar files are actually stored in the user Library / Application Support folder (where the games are saved.) But this isn't all that useful, because the real question now isn't "how can I find version X of minecraft", but "how can I find version X of the launcher?"

What was SO insulting, is of course I tried downloading the legacy version of Minecraft, which the website offers in case of compatibility issues, but it was something like version 1.01! Mojang seriously needs to offer the previous major version for download - at least until they can verify that it does work.

Grats! 🙂

A separate launcher download sounds like a great idea.

This issue was classified as "resolved" - it is clearly not, however, the information shows that the title of problem was not entirely accurate. It is the new launcher that is incompatible with Mavericks, and that NEEDS to be resolved, so I will open a new ticket.

OK, I've relisted this significant issue under the more appropriate title "new launcher incompatible with Mavericks":

I am very eager to be able to use the current version of Minecraft, because I really want to use the new Realms servers, and they claim to require the new launcher.
