What I expected to happen was the mob to attack me.

What actually happened was my shield auto blocked and knocked back the mobs.

This is intended behavior of what the shield should do.

It automatically blocks, I don't press any buttons. This is not what a shield should do.

If it is automatically doing it, you're key is probably stuck because blocking works perfectly for me. Try restarting your game or your computer and see if that fixes it.
