invisible blocks

When mining huge quantities of netherrack with an efficiency IV diamond pickaxe, sometimes a block is mined, but it still persists invisibly. How do I know? Because the game doesn't want me to walk into it and I suffocate when I do. Restarting the game makes it visible again.
