Minecraft freezes when i try to turn on sound

Well, it is quite simple really, when i went to options in game and tried to turn on the sound, my minecraft froze. I have reinstalled minecraft (deleted the .minecraft folder) and it still seems to happen, even when im not in game. I have noticed that this has been happening since i updated to the latest Java version (Update 13). It does not crash, but just freezes and i have to use Task Manager to get it closed. I believe that the problem is not minecraft, but the new version of Java, now i may be completely wrong but i pay strict attention to stuff as i have been hacked and have lost a very expensive computer before, and im not gonna have that happen again.
