Mushrooms are randomly growing on top of wood blocks next to other mushrooms.

Works as intended. Mushrooms can grow on surfaces so long as the proper lighting conditions are met.

They can grow everywhere: On iron, stone, wood, obsidian... Been like that from the beginning.
