Error: Could not find or load main class net.minecraft.client.main.Main

I played Minecraft earlier this morning with no issue, however when I attempt to access Minecraft now I get the following message:

Error: Could not find or load main class net.minecraft.client.main.Main
Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM warning: Using incremental CMS is deprecated and will likely be removed in a future release

Hitting "Play" after this will load the previous version of minecraft with no issue.

I have removed and reinstalled java, removed and reinstalled minecraft, rebooted, and deleted the .minecraft folder to no effect.

The attached log is the only text in the "Game Output(Username)" field.

Occurring on my system as well – Windows 7 64 bit and my wifes computer Windows 10 64 bit. Also my buddy is getting a bunch of weird Java argument errors now as well – Windows 10 64 bit. All of us were playing just fine yesterday with no issues up to 2240 hrs Central Time on 1.9.

Currently we are able to load up older editions – i.e. 1.8.9 including with resource packs.

It appears to only affect 1.9.

I was able to fix this, at least for now, by editing my profile and selecting "Use Version: Snapshot 1.9". For some reason it thinks the most recent version isn't 1.9, acting like it's still in snapshot.

It´s a Downgrade. The Update will be delete the 1.9 folder.

clear your .minecraft folder and start again. The Download is going to start for version 1.9/snapshot

Actually I think that Mojang just fixed it, I just reloaded with "latest version" selected and it worked.

Update – I uninstalled Java and reinstalled Java. Rebooted and then I uninstalled Minecraft and reinstalled it using the minecraft.msi file. It removed the 1.9 folder but did not replace it. In the launcher logs it says it is downloading 1.8.8 – NOT 1.9. That is where it fails at. The comment above about using Snapshot 1.9 (release 1.9) is correct – it works that way. Someone botched the loader command and is calling for 1.8.8 instead of the newest 1.9 version!

This also fixed my wife's and my buddy's issues!

Wow – now it works normally with Use Latest Version! Thanks.
