My computer had a fatal crash (a known issue and unrelated to Minecraft) while I was launching the game, I had hit the PLAY button. When I rebooted, the launcher had forgotten my logged in accounts, and forgot all of my launcher settings (all of the different versions I had set-up)

I think you're having a different problem than mine, My crash isn't caused by Minecraft itself, it happened just before writing this and Minecraft wasn't even open, however, due to the crash, Minecraft had an adverse reaction. Note: The settings reset isn't every time I crash, just when Minecraft is booting up as the crash happens.
Righto, my settings seem to reset after having to force-end the process which takes about 5 minutes, it locks everything on my computer up other than being able to open things, eg I can load a tab on chrome, however I can't visit a website, it just sits there spinning, can't open programs on my computer, however once the launcher is forced to end it's process it all starts working again.
I'll re-create an issue with this.
Settings file needs to be saved into a temp file and then atomically swapped when it is fully written to the harddrive.
Having the same problem here.
Here's the basic process I go through.
Start computer
Log in (windows)
Load Minecraft (Forge - however it uses the regular launcher to start)
Hit the play button
Button goes grey
Not responding appears above on the window
Computer starts locking up
Killing the process takes about 15 minutes to happen.
The first time this happened, it managed to fill the remaining space on one of my hard drives completely with a very large .log file (60~ Gig)
After that, it continues locking up whenever I restart my computer and go to launch MC.
Nothing had changed before this happened, it was the regular startup procedure as always.
Following the crashes, I forced a windows update, did a virus scan, reinstalled Java Version 8 as the launcher links you to when you un-install it.
Restarted the computer
Happens again.
The only way I've seemed to get around it is by logging my account out, then logging it back in before launching the game, it's as if it's losing connection to the Mojang servers, this issue does sound related to what I am having hence the posting here.
