Tested both the Windows(alternative), and the installed file which seems to be the same actual exe.
No error messages, it just closes within a fraction of a second.
Removing the symlink allows the launcher to create a new .minecraft folder and start correctly.

Symlinking to local files seem to work as intented.
Symlinking to locally mapped drives pointing to paths on other hosts, also seem to work as intended.
Symlinking to UNC path's though, could be reproduced. This particular use case was caused by not stripping away the absolute path before the UNC parts begin.
