I haven't played in a good while - probably close to a year. Today I attempted to play and was forced to update.
The Minecraft Updater gets most of the way through "Updating Java runtime..." and hits me with "Unable to update the Minecraft Runtime Environment."
I have attached the full launcher log text file. Looking at the end of the
[media]from today, the following error is probably responsible:
[Info: 2019-10-11 16:30:03.8094579: PistonUpdate.cpp(361)] MoveFile(C:\Users\J\AppData\Local\Temp\MinecraftLauncher\PistonStaging\3e86865deec0814c958bcf7fb87f790bccc0e8bd, E:\Program Files (x86)\Minecraft Launcher\runtime\jre-x64\LICENSE
[Error: 2019-10-11 16:30:03.8098162: PistonUpdate.cpp(403)] Update failed for: LICENSE, Error: The system cannot move the file to a different disk drive.
[Error: 2019-10-11 16:30:03.8103588: UpdatePistonComponent.cpp(50)] Piston update failed!
I don't see what the problem is, however, as I should have all necessary licenses. I've been playing Minecraft since before the game had an ending.

I did attempt to run as administrator earlier, I believe. I'll be home again in several hours and can try again, but I'm pretty sure I already did.
I have the same exact issue, I've tried running as admin multiple times and nothing has worked. Here are a few other things I've tried:
Reinstall of Minecraft and Java
Disabling AV
SFC scan to check for windows corruption
Deleted temp files for the launcher
Using the legacy launcher
I've reached out to Mojang support but I have no idea when they will reply.
I had the same issue after setting up a new PC tonight. I solved it by moving the Launcher (re-installing) to the same drive as java is installed on. I think it has to do with the new Java Licensing Model.
This issue is caused by Java being installed on a different drive than the one you started the Launcher on.
See MCL-12229.
I have java and minecraft in the same drive, but i still get the same problem. i literally just purchased the game 20 mins ago. As soon as i did, i followed the installing steps, and i got to this issue. then i downloaded java on to the same drive, but still get the same problem. can anyone help me?
I tried to install both Java and Minecraft on drive C and problem solved. But drive C is my system drive, no enough space, then I installed Java and Minecraft on drive E, but this problem happend again.
I can hereby confirm that the issue has been resolved (atleast in my case), in the updated Bootstrap code (601) of the Launcher build/version that was released/signed on October 15th.

Does the launcher successfully start if you start it with administrator rights? It seems like it cannot properly move a file.
