[Linux] Launcher crashes immediately playing older Minecraft versions

Older versions of Minecraft, such as 1.8.4 and 1.7.10, will immediately crash when trying to launch them in the Launcher beta on Linux.

Is there a way to get the old Launcher back, so that these versions are playable? Having such old versions available is important because many mods will not work on newer Minecraft versions due to workload required to update, or because of preference for older Minecraft features (such as the original PVP).

Resolved: Change Java 11 back to Java 8 with sudo update-alternatives --config java

and restart the launcher. Older versions will now work.

There should probably be a Launcher prompt to make this clear.

I had a similar problem, and it turns out I had deprecated Java flags in my launcher profiles. Cleared those out and voila! Don't know if this will work for you, but it's worth a shot!
