To "log out" on a public PC delete [minecraft|http://hopper.minecraft.net/help/finding-minecraft-data-folder]
or open [minecraft|http://hopper.minecraft.net/help/finding-minecraft-data-folder]/launcher_profiles.json
with a text editor and delete your account data at the bottom of the files manually.
Confirmed; chase led to update on Minecraft Wiki. Bug affects version 1.2.2. Workaround: Keep only one profile, then log out functions normally. If on a multi-user installation where you can't do this, edit the launcher_profiles.json in /.minecraft as described in an earlier comment.
Something I forgot to add is that you have to select something other than "Close launcher when game starts" in your profile to be able to log out at all, even normally. This sort of practice (default-to-insecure) is something that I disagree with, but unfortunately, it is normal (I almost always see "Stay logged in" or "Remember me on this computer" checked by default on login pages; unfortunately, settings of my browser and those of public workstations to sandblast themselves every time they're closed do not affect Minecraft!)
Confirmed.
