i got the same message saying unable to start Minecraft please check you configuration

I also experienced this problem:

1. I did a fresh install of Minecraft Java Edition for Windows

2. I clicked "Play"

At this point I got the error message. Then I clicked on "Installations -> New..." and tried to create one for 1.16.2, but the dropdown with the available versions was empty.

My hacky solution was to copy the entire .minecraft directory from a nearby Linux installation and replace %appdata%/.minecraft with it.
