Launcher doesn't open in Windows 8.1

After updating to Windows 8.1 the launcher won't start, doesn't put out any errors or crash reports.
After clicking on the minecraft icon in my hotbar, the icon highlights for several minutes and then returns to normal. I've tried using Magic launcher and the game works.

Steps I've taken to try and fix it:

  • Re-download the launcher

  • Delete.minecraft folder

  • Remove Java and re-installing it

  • Upgrade Java 7 to Java 8 beta

This is a technical support issue; this site is for bug reports only. For technical support please use the Mojang Support Center.

How is this not a bug if the launcher is incompatible with a windows version while other launchers are?

If it only happens to you, and works fine for other people, then there's probably not a bug, and the problem you're experiencing is with your system.

How do you know that's only for me? Do you use windows 8.1 and it works for you? Usually you post bug reports to see if it's reproduce-able and then decide if it's a technical problem with my machine or an issue with the launcher itself.
More so if I described to you every possible fix I can do on my end to make it work and it still doesn't.
I think Tails is a little trigger happy with the resolved button.

I just updated to 8.1 yesterday, and minecraft now has went to crap. wont load, wont open wont do anything! It was working great until i updated. I feel your pain!

I too upgraded to Windows 8.1. The minecraft launcher is most insistent to install Java even though I have reinstalled the component several times. Launching the minecraft launcher with administrative privileges results in the same issue.

Running Windows 8.1 Pro x64
Java 1.7.45 update

After troubleshooting with Process Monitor, Minecraft launcher is unable to locate the registry key HKLM\Software\JavaSoft\Java Runtime Environment\1.7.0_45\JavaHome. Creating a new registry key type String with the name JavaHome, I entered the value C:\Program Files\Java\jre7 which is the location of my Java installation. Minecraft was able to start there afterwards.

This issue may be with Java not installing the correct registry key in Windows 8.1 rather than Minecraft launcher not finding the key.

I am having the same issue. I have double checked the JavaHome key and path variables. I am also on windows 8.1 pro and have downloaded the latest version of java (1.7.45 32 and 64bit). The only way I can play is by re downloading the new launder every time from the website and it will work only once. I have tried to find a launder log file, but I have not been able to find one.

I am running Minecraft 1.6.2 and updated to windows 8.1 pro... as soon as I updated it my minecraft launcher does absolutely nothing, no error screens nothing. all it does is flash once then vanishes. I dont even see the launcher to find out what is happening. I have updated Java and my Nvidia drivers to the absolute most current ones available and it still does the same thing. I went as far as to uninstall minecraft, deleting the folder and then uninstalling java and my video drivers, rebooting then installing the drivers clean and reinstalling minecraft and it stil does the same thing

I HAVE FOUND THE SOLUTION! I know this is late but I just updated and you have to right click the minecraft properties compatibility run for windows 7 mode! 😃 It actually works!
