Game ended with bad state (exit code 1)

So here's what's been happening: When ever I open the launcher and click "Play", the launcher starts the game, the crafting table icon appears in the Dock, then immediately closes without ever launching the game. I check the development console and this is what I see:

I've seen some "fixes" online and none of it seems to work. The general "fix" is to delete the versions folder and have the launcher download it, but that doesn't appear to do anything at all.

This problem is repeatable for me since I haven't been able to launch Minecraft since the launcher came out; every attempt ended with a bad state, exit code 1.
