I launched minecraft for windows 10 via the launcher and i can't update it to 1.18

you can force the update from within Microsoft store I believe, if you cant, uninstall it and then install it from the store instead. Good luck!
I also have this issue, the standalone minecraft app is no longer in the Microsoft Store, it appears to be integrated into the new launcher.
I have the exact same issue. my husband was playing 1.18 bedrock and I could not join because I still had 1.17 after installing the new launcher. when it didn't wanted to update I uninstalled it. Now I get an Error when I try to reinstall it.

If you are getting an "error" that would be a separate issue. Please search for an existing report of that "error" and if there is not one, feel free to create a new report. Be sure to provide complete details including the exact error message and steps to reproduce it.
I had this issue also, I uninstalled the game and tried to reinstall, when I attempt to reinstall, the download idles immediately and wont progress no matter how long I wait.
