Instead of using saved password I now have to enter two passwords

In MCL-19899 I complained that the launcher is unable to save the login password. This was closed with a reference to MCL-18924 which hints at installing a supported password manager. So I installed gnome-keyring. Now when I start minecraft I have to enter the password for gnome-keyring, which makes sense, and then I still have to enter my minecraft password. Which does not make sense.

So following that advice made it even worse.

Hi there!
Could you answer few questions regarding this issue, it will help with the investigation:

  • Does this issue still occurs to you on newest version of Launcher?

  • Have you tried to install Launcher from the minecraft.net website?

  • Are you logged in in both Xbox app, MS store, and Launcher with the same MS account ?

  • Is your Windows and associated apps (Xbox app, MS store) up-to-date?

  • Have you tried to re-registering MS store as written here ?

  • Do you use VPN or any of the incompatible software on machine you try to log-in?

  • Could you provide us with more in-depth repro steps?

> Does this issue still occurs to you on newest version of Launcher?
As far as I can tell yes. It did install an update when I started it today and then ask me for two passwords.

> Have you tried to install Launcher from the minecraft.net website?
I can only find a "buy minecraft" button, but no download link. I already bought it, I don't want to buy it again.

> A Are you logged in in both Xbox app, MS store, and Launcher with the same MS account ?
I have neither an Xbox, an Xbox app, an MS store or a MS account.

> Is your Windows and associated apps (Xbox app, MS store) up-to-date?
I don't have Windows or associated apps.

> Have you tried to re-registering MS store as written here ?
Again, I have no such thing.

> Do you use VPN or any of the incompatible software on machine you try to log-in?
Nope

> Could you provide us with more in-depth repro steps?

  • I start the launcher with the command "minecraft"

  • It asks me to unlock my keyring where I need the first passoword.

  • Then it asks me if I want to authenticate with a Microsoft or a Mojang account.

  • I pick Mojang. (Just like last time as it could have remembered.)

  • Then it asks me for my minecraft password. (Which it is supposed to get from my keyring.)
