Minecraft 1.8 still enforces JAVA 6 on my new mac book pro

Bought a new Mac. My son wants to play minecraft. Bought the game. Guess what? The minecraft installer wants to revert the mac java 8 to ancient technology java 6 full of security holes.

Could you please update the mac installer so it uses a more recent version of JAVA?
I now need to play it in a windows virtual machine on my Mac.

Dupe of MCL-1049. This will be fixed when the new MC launcher is released for Mac.

The current Minecraft launcher is unable to detect any other installation of java except for that released by Apple, which is Java 6 (they have updated it to fix security issues, which are only really applicable to web applications). Once the launcher is open, the Executable (in the Edit Profile menu), can be changed to that of Oracle Java 8 (use /Library/Internet Plug-Ins/JavaAppletPlugin.plugin/Contents/Home/bin/java).

You also don't have to "downgrade" your java. Apple java is a completely separate installation from Oracle java. Use this to install it.
