I tried to start minecraft yesterday when suddenly this happened:
Launcher automatically updated to the prettier one.
I logged in
Tried to start
Error
The error contained this message:

But all the drivers on my pc are up to date so suppose that can't be the problem.

It may not be your drivers. What worked for me was doing this -->
1) Go to your minecraft shortcut on your desktop.
2) Left click the minecraft icon and click on properties.
3) On the shortcut tab, find "Target" and click to edit the text.
4) Type a space after the original text and paste this: --workDir %ProgramData%\.minecraft
5) Make sure to hit apply, then launch.

If you want to install Optifine with this, make sure to change the directory for Optifine to ProgramData then .minecraft

SOLUTION!!! Finally (god this was maddening!) . Solved by sam_86314 : You need to manually set the java directory for the game. Go to System Preferences, click on "Java", go to the "Java" tab and click "View". Select and copy all of the text under "Path". Now open the Minecraft Launcher. Click "Launch options" and click on the version of the game you're trying to run. Head down to "Java executable" and turn that on. Paste the text you copied into the box. My Mac is running 10.12.3, but I think the steps are the same for all macOS versions. In my case, the path to my Java 8 installation was /Library/Internet Plug-Ins/JavaAppletPlugin.plugin/Contents/Home/bin/java
