Cannot launch Minecraft

I have not used Minecraft for a week or so and on trying to use today I get a new launcher(2.0.760). When I select play I either get 'preparing' which after an hour I gave up on or a 'Minecraft launcher has stopped working' error. In about 15 attempts I was connected once.
I have updated my drivers and tried switching off Kaspersky but no difference. I then downloaded a 'repair' but no difference.
Very frustrating.

Please check if the hotfix of MC-112780 fixes your problem.

But I have a Radeon Video Card!

Yes, an NVIDIA Radeon.

Radeon is an AMD product not NVIDIA!

sorry don't understand. What is hs?

hs_err_pidXXXX.log (with XXXX = numbers)

All I have in directory is Launcher and 'nativelog'. and three folders.

Clearly not getting anywhere here. If I delete the files and do a new install what files do I need to keep to ensure my 'worlds' are not lost?

Keep .minecraft/saves and (optionally) .minecraft/servers.dat, .minecraft/options.txt
