When the launcher is started, it opens a dialog window with the warning that it requires JRE 1.6.0, which, when OKed, opens the browser to download Java.
What I expected to happen was...:
Launch minecraft.jar
What actually happened was...:
When the launcher is started, it crashes with the warning that it requires JRE 1.6.0, which, when "OK" pressed, opens the browser to download Java.
Steps to Reproduce:

Key word here is "should". It does NOT. We, in fact, had installed the latest version prior to running the MCL, and again installed it via the link that was opened.
Therefore, this bug report needs to be reopened.

Hi Kumasasa,
The problem with crashing it is that the game never starts.
The problem may be related to permissions, particularly on Windows 8.
It is now fixed. A third JRE installation followed by running the MCL as an Administrator seems to have been the magic formula.
I recommend that anyone having this issue while using a non-Administrator account run the MCL the first time as an Administrator.
Thank you for your time,
Robert~
P.S. It may, or may not, make a difference that I had installed MCL 1.0.6 after I installed the JRE for the third time.
I've tried reinstalling the JRE and running the MCL as an admin on Windows 8 and I'm still getting an error about Minecraft requiring Java 1.6.0. Very frustrated.

This appears to still be a problem. I'm running vista. Previously I had Java 1.5 and using MagicLauncher. Just downloaded MCL and ran it. Couldn't type in the text fields and thought "must be java needs updating". Updated java (to 1.7) and ran MCL again. I get the error "...etc. needs Java 1.6.0"
Edit: Hm. I went to uninstall Java 7 and noticed 2 versions of java: "Java 7 update 45" and "Java(TM) 6 update 22". Uninstalling Java 7 took care of the issue. MCL launches correctly now.
Minecraft / Launcher is compiled against Java 1.6 so you should get this message only if you have either no Java at all or Java <= 1.5 installed on the computer.
The provided link http://java.com/download/ won't let you download anything else than the last version.
