A web search comes up with a lot of users like me who keep their OS on a SSD, and keep their content (minecraft) on a drive that is mapped as a folder.
The issue is outlined pretty clearly here:

The "solution" is not clear, and I think the launcher should be repaired rather than requiring technical solutions by users. We haven't been able to play minecraft since the launcher updated. Tons of other games work fine this way, including games using launchers like Steam and Origin.
If nobody wants to fix the launcher, please instead provide instructions for us.

I can load Minecraft Forge fine without mods, but if I put a mod in the mod folder and then try to launch it, it crashes without the MOJANG logo showing up and sends me back to the launcher.

Mine Crashes the same way that is said in the PNG file. WTF is happening? How can they let this happen?! Very disappointing...
Mine was/is doing the same thing, I downloaded the old laucher, it works... buuuuuut my skin is a Steve although I have a skin that I downloaded... I really want the new launcher to work someone fix this!!!!!
I have the same problem and this is the first time playing Minecraft on a Pc so I'm completely clueless on what to do.
@unknown, using junctions is, as far as I know, no longer possible; for technical reasons. I'm not sure why, but the Mojang devs know of this; they are not changing this back.
We always intended you to use
--workDir /path/to/wherever, I didn't know so many people were using the APPDATA workaround. We can't support that going forward, so you'll just have to use the command line argument sorry!– @unknown

To everyone else: If you got any issues like The game has stopped working, we're sorry for the inconvenience, then that's a game crash, not a launcher issue. Your crash probably has already been reported here, search for it.
Also, please keep in mind that the lingua franca for Minecraft development is English; hence bug or crash reports are accepted in English only, sorry.
