Minecraft Crashes on Start up

I am trying to assist my friend who's Minecraft seems to crash every time they try to start it up. They did not have this issue prior to updating to MC version 1.12.1. I have experienced an issue somewhat like this in the past and advised him to go into his "options.txt" and set "useVsync" and "enableVBO" to false, but it somehow returned to true. It loaded slightly longer and then was given this crash report:

---- Minecraft Crash Report ----

Can you try deleting options.txt entirely? If that stops the crashing it could be a problem with the resource pack.

I have the same issue but no resource pack. Literally the exact line for line except no resource pack
