When starting the Java launcher using Java 9 it complains that you are using an outdated version of Java, when in fact it is the latest version available.

This does happen with the only available official Java-based launcher available from the official site (downloaded today) / for many OS's. In addition to saying its outdated. Minecraft does crash on launch. However, if there are serious rewrites for the game to work I suppose this can't be helped, for now.
I'll leave this report open, but a few things to consider:
This is a bug about the Minecraft Launcher. I've moved this ticket to the correct project, MCL.
You're using the old outdated Minecraft launcher. It is not being updated anymore, hence any bugs with it won't be fixed.
Java 9 is not supported by Mojang yet as it requires some major code rewrites. It is recommended to still use Java 8 which is expected to still run best.
