You cannot cross-play with Java Edition and Pocket Edition, you'd both need to be on Java Edition or on Pocket Edition. However, you can cross-play with Pocket Edition on Windows 10 Edition.

@Dani Bshiri Java have different mechanics than Bedrock, if both are able to crossplay with each other, you'll have unexpected results.

This is WAI (Working As Intended) as of right now.
