As you move the cursor across the available recipes, items in you inventory are moved to the crafting area (both 2x2 and 3x3 crafting table). If there are items at you feet these are picked up to fill the empty slots so as you move to the next recipe the items in the crafting slots are dropped.
Items are also not returned to the same place in the inventory even if the space is still available.
This is not how the crafting system works on other platforms, I have until reasonably been playing on laptop with Windows 10. I moved platforms for the neather update and this error has been present since then, on 2 worlds/saves.
