If you put a scaffolding to y level 255 and expand it 6 blocks out then add another layer to the ends of the scaffold you will die if you try to climb that layer to 256. Sometimes nothing happens but you'll die if you touch anything besides the scaffolding.

Are you trying to extend scaffolding out by more than 6 blocks? If so, the last scaffolding block will fall because there is a limit to how far scaffolding can be extended without support underneath. Otherwise, please clarify the Description section above using this format:

I'm not scaffolding beyond 6 blocks I'm just adding an outline of scaffolding on top of the 6 block limit because why not and when I climb that outer layer it kills me
