disconnecting and reconnecting my internet didnt work. also, i think this could be related to the fact that when i try to join a realm it says my account isnt set up properly.

Have you tried logging out and back in?
Also on Xbox, try quitting Minecraft entirely (via the menu button from the main screen).
Do you see any messages about not being to play online, etc when you start or go to the realms or featured server tabs?

ive tried all of that. it says on realms i cant play because of how my account is set up, even though i have allowed multiplayer in microsoft account settings. its possibly because i dont have xbox live, because im not willing to pay 120$ a year for that.
