I have had this happen a few times. I dig up toward the surface, and sand or gravel falls on me, suffocating me. I am unable to move, and my shovel does nothing. I end up just suffocating. Lost two stacks of diamond blocks, full diamond armor, and an inventory full of other stuff. Thanks. I love spending 8 hours searching for stuff and then dying because of a bug. Repeatedly.

I know that. But I should be able to dig myself out of the sand or at least move out of it. I had a diamond shovel. Didn't do anything. Quit marking every complaint as "resolved" when they're not resolved, and they're not invalid.
Just because you don't want to do any work to fix anything doesn't mean I don't have a legit issue.
It is not clear what the "bug" is that you are reporting. Sand (and gravel) can often fall on you when digging straight up, and this can cause suffocation. One trick is to place a torch at your feet before digging straight up and that will break any sand/gravel that falls on you.
