Here are some more details of the bug. With compass in hot bar boarding boat causes the compass to point away from spawn. While navigating boat compass doesn't update. If in boat and look around compass updates but still points away from spawn. When you leave boat compass updates and correctly points to spawn. Playing on Android 5.0.2 with Samsung Galaxy tab A

Verified on Ipad Air, iOS9

There were some bugs that are marked fixed on Samsung but which are still in the iOS9 code

I have noticed exactly the same.
The compass needle takes a random bearing as you enter a boat but not back towards the world spawning point as it should. It can vary during a long boat ride but still not towards the spawning point.
This as Allen said is not replicated in a minecart or, as I just verified, while flying in creative.
