End Portal Fall Damage

So I was playing and successfully looted 3 end cities. I returned to the end portal to return to the overworld. As I set my spawn in a bed in the end portal room next to the stairs, when I spawned back in the end portal room, but I didn't. The spawn put me clipped into the end portal frame and I immediately took 9 hearts of damage (with full protection 4 diamonds armor) and spawned back in the end. So I jumped back in and was immediately spawned in the end, with all of my items gone. There was no death screen, the only way I realized I died was because of the chat message. I lost all of the loot and stuff I had, due to the fact that my items either got deleted or they went into the portal and got destroyed.
