Whenever an empty map is opened it increases the file size drastically. From my experience, 4 new opened maps adds 1 megabyte of data to the world file, and there is no way of getting rid those megabytes. This makes it scary making large map rooms, due to irreversible, large file size.
Steps to reproduce:
1. Make a new world, then leave it.
2. Check the world size, then rejoin.
3. Open 3-4 new empty maps.
4. Leave the world and see the world size have increased.

I can confirm, this bug can really kill a minecraft world.
It's a problem even on xbox, mobile and other bedrock platforms.
Seems like it takes so much space cuz every time you create a new map, the game creates the other "zoomed" version of the map. So it's like creating 4 or 5 maps evey time a map is created.
I suggest to check Silentwisperer. He made a video about causes of lag in Minecraft bedrock and explains really well the map issue

Affects 1.17.34

Is this report going to be updated any further? Or is it going to be marked as "Confirmed" anytime soon? Because this is still a prominent issue in Bedrock.

Still an issue.
I have created a new world for test and checked the file size, than made some maps and checked again the file size: drastically increased.

still an issue in 1.18.2, please fix it I really wanna make maps in my worlds

I also have this issue. Destroying every copy of the map item (eg. by throwing them into fire) does not free up the space.

Hi
I am unable to reproduce this issue, so would it be possible to upload video of it occuring? It would be very helpful.

Kmb what kind of device were you on for that video?

Resolving temporarily as Awaiting Response. Does the world's size decrease when you remove the maps from your inventory, for example by putting them in a chest? This ticket will reopen automatically when you reply.

No, the file size is permanently increased. Destroying the maps in lava or the void doesn't work either.

Removing the maps from your inventory does not fix the problem. As already explained in the comments, even destroying every copy of a map doesn't get the file size to go back down.

To add i believe it is when you fill the map in it creates data for every chunk stepped in

Just tested once again in 1.19.80: maps still inflate world size.
The in-game world size counter is slightly inaccurate, more of an estimation. Here are accurate steps to reproduce:
Create a fresh world, exit without moving at all.
Open the world in an NBT editor like an old version of Universal Minecraft Editor (current one is paid, you can find an old version for free easily).
Notice that there are 0 maps
Close the world in the NBT editor and reopen the world in-game
Create a map in-game and leave the world immediately, without even viewing it.
Reopen the world in an NBT editor.
Expected Result: There is one map created at the default scale, with a very minor file size increase.
Observed Result: There are 5 maps created at all scales, without even viewing the map. The file size is increased permanently and to a greater effect than it would be otherwise. (See "Map Bug.png" attached to the report, showing 1 map in-game with 5 maps in the world NBT).
When a map is generated, it remains in the files forever; hence why maps continue to increment in numbers in-game overtime. This is intended and destroying the maps will not do anything. What is unintended is the auto-generation of all scales for every map created.

Still affects current 1.19 updates.
This also affects a huge amount of worlds, as theres a toggle you can set that allows new members to spawn with maps. So on a popular realm etc your can get a huge file size increase. This happened on one of my servers and we had to delete all maps using world edit. Reduced world size by 500mb after just a couple weeks of the world being open.
Reopened for review.

This bug is going to have a lot of impact with the new cartographer changes coming in 1.20.40

when I tried with 550+ maps the file size only went up by about 1 megabyte

Ye, this is a serious problem!!

As many here would know, there's no file access for consoles, so these hidden map files can tank their performance.
