If you try to put a nether brick or a metal nugget to a furnace's fuel slot, you can! That means you can use nether brick pieces or metal nuggets to smelt! However, you need 10 to fully smelt a block or item. So start smelting for metal nuggets with metal nuggets or nether brick pieces for nether brick pieces!
