A large amount of the world disappeared

My brother and I had created a flat creative mode world, and built several structures. When he got on one day, a large portion of the world had seemingly vanished (Pictures are included), including our houses. Not far from the spawn point was the rest of the land, which seemed to continue in an infinite direction, as usual. He mentioned that occasionally he left the world without saving it, and that expirimental gameplay was on.
