Planting a 4x4 spruce or jungle tree bellow y=0 doesn’t grow.
Dark oak does work.
(I assume this is 1.18 beta. As I turned on experimental mode)
reproduced by:
1) clearing out a chunck
2) placing 4 saplings of spruce on 4 dirt blocks in center of chunk where the height is less than 0
3) bonemeal the tree
4) tree doesn’t grow.
Expected results:
given enough space the tree should grow below y=0
note, if I pillar up the dirt to 0 or greater, then it works.

Yes I’m sure.
I’m in creative. If I place the saplings at y=-1 it won’t grow with multiple stacks of bonemeal.
if I put dirt above those very saplings and put 4 more saplings on top of that (y=1) then they grow into a full tree with just a handful of bonemeal.
even though there is technically*less*room for those higher saplings (closer to a cave roof by 2 blocks)
both groups have the same distance in X/Z from the nearest wall.

Are you sure you have enough space for these trees to grow? The game recognizes how much space there is around the saplings and based on that it decides if the tree should grow. Maybe the proper conditions are not met where you try to grow the trees?
