I can’t change name tag’s names in anvils.

When I go to change the name of a name tag in an anvil, I can put the tag in and type the name which I want to re-name it, but there is still the red ‘X’ which means it wont allow me to actually change it and then take it out of the anvil finished. I’ve tried in different ways thinking I might be doing something wrong, crafting multiple anvils using new and used ones and it isn’t working. I have 45XP so plenty to simply re-name a tag, and I’ve been able to previously name tags as on our realm my boyfriend and I have created a full village by breeding and building their own house, having to tag villagers to make sure they don’t despawn. We now can’t expand and are in a stump because we can name our new villagers in scare that we will produce good ones and not be able to keep them around. Also, I like naming my dogs (which I also have a lot of haha) and many of them are unfortunately nameless right now.
