You can hold down right click to place blocks on all other axis while having nothing else but the other block to attach to, but when this is done while placing in front of you, it does not work at all.

I am standing on top of the block and placing but I have to press the button each time its placed unlike with other axis where you can just hold right click

You have to be standing on or "above" the block you want to place the new block "in front of".
If you move too quickly you won't be able to place another block that way, and in survival mode you will fall off.
Does it work if you stand on the block and move forward at the same rate the blocks are placed?
