Bees sting even with campfire in place

I placed the campfire beneath the beehive as I've done many times in Java only to find it does not work in Bedrock. Twice I located beehives and twice I placed the campfires. The bees became angry and stung my character after I sheared the honeycomb. I've never had any trouble like this in Java.
