Intermittently freezes during launch - sound system

Minecraft BE 1.21 intermittently freezes during launch - sound system

Hi.  This is my second report for the same bug.  (Today, I was unable to locate MCPE-183050 (created June 19, 2024) in your JIRA to update it with additional information.  Feel free to cancel and bury MCPE-183050, as this new report contains all the previous info as well as updates, and also the video re-creating the problem requested by "[Mod] Greymagic27" within MCPE-183050.)

Intermittently (most of the time, more than 8 of 10 launch attempts), when I launch Minecraft BE after 1.21 upgrade, it freezes.

  • Sometimes it freezes for many minutes then terminates.

  • Sometimes it freezes for a few minutes than launches ok.

  • If I re-launch it again and again, finally it launches ok.

This issue is new with Minecraft BE 1.21.  (Minecraft BE 1.20 did not have this issue (hundreds of attempts).  Minecraft JE 1.21 launches fine (1 out of 1 attempts).

I have this work-around: if I keep launching it, sooner or later it launches ok.  (perhaps after 10-20 minutes).

These additional symptoms suggest the freezing is an interaction with the operating system's sound system:

  • The one time when I already had an audible YouTube video playing, then launched Minecraft, the speaker started a "bangy, clicky" noise that persisted even after I closed both the browser and Minecraft; and I had to reboot the OS.

  • While Minecraft is frozen (during the launching process), if I try to launch a YouTube video with audio, the video gets stuck waiting to launch.

  • After Minecraft finally launches, the OS reflects (in one case, one minute exactly) that there is no output device; then (after a while) the OS again displays the data for the output devices (3 of them).

I perceive 4 states for the sound system during this issue.  My  test app for "app that uses sound" for using the sound system is Youtube viewing a video, but other apps are similarly affected, eg. "media player" displaying a video on my local system.

1. Normal case - Youtube video launches ok and sound ok.
2. While Youtube video launches ok and sound ok, then I launch Minecraft, , the speaker started a "bangy, clicky" noise that persisted even after I closed both the browser and Minecraft; and sometimes even after cold boot. It was resolved only when Minecraft finally launched.
3. While Minecraft is stuck launching, if I attempt to view a video in Youtube, it is stuck during the video launch process.
4. After Minecraft launches and goes to its "play/settings/realms" menu, the sound system is disabled for a while (1 minute exactly, in the only example I timed).  During this time, Youtube videos that are "stuck" launching finally launch ok, but I cannot hear them (until the sound system comes back after a while).

I made a video recreating the problem.  The camera chopped the video into 3 physical videos.  These are the links to them in Youtube:

During this trial, Minecraft launched on the 5th try, roughly 15 minutes after the start of the 1st try.  The video is from a stand-alone camera (since the OS built-in screen-capture aborted when Minecraft 1.21 first launched).

I found a second work-around.

#1. My first work-around (that I had since I opened the ticket in June) is to start Minecraft again and again (as per video).

#2. My second work-around: change the "sound system" "output device" from "Speaker / Headphones (Realtek Audio)" to "Speakers (2- Logitech USB Headset", before 1st attempt to launch Minecraft.
