Player teleported into void after entering gateway

In Hardcore bedrock. I entered a gateway back to the main island in the end. Instead of teleporting back on land, I was spawned falling into the void which almost killed me. This was the first time it happened to me and never in survival. Not sure if it happens all the time but it did this time.
