I died, closed the game and all my items were gone when I came back

I died and closed minecraft. I was hoping it didnt autosave and I wouldnt be dead. When I came back all my items were gone. I died near my bed. All my items were gone. They couldn't have despawned. It shouldn't do that regardless even if I didn't save and quit.

List of steps taken. I died and closed the game without saving. Sometimes if you do that you won't be dead. I opened the game back up. I was by my bed close to where I died and all my items were gone.

I would expect all my items to be there.

Actual results all my items were gone. No xp orbs, no items.
