boat not working properly and stuck indise it

I crafted a boat to cross a large ocean biome, entered the boat but the controls didn't work properly. I press A and go right instead of left, I press D and go left instead of right. I press W and nothing happens instead of forward. I press S and nothing happens instead of reversing. Ithen managed to move forward by holding the A and D keys together, so get to the otherside of the ocean and press shift to get out of the boat and nothing happens. I couldn't break the boat from within it either. Started the game several times including restarting the pc but everytime still stuck in the boat. thought that was it and my game was finished. I thought maybe if i connect my xbox controller I could use that to get out of the boat and hey presto that worked thankfully. Now though, I too scared to get in a boat.
