Map icons don't show player orientation anymore

Me and My family have played minecraft for years, but we have noticed for a while now that the map does not show the orientation of players via a pointer when you are past the map border. This is extremely frustrating for young players and players who are not very experienced. It has always shown the direction your facing when you are off the map, but at some point it was changed to show a square icon instead. Me and my brother are fine using coordinates, but my other siblings are having a lot of trouble, My nine year old little sister spent hours trying to get back on the map. Compasses only show the spawn point, so if the map is not of a location where you last slept or it’s not the original spawn point then it is VERY hard to get back to that location. Also getting a loadstone is NOT easy for young players, so it’s not really an option. If the map icons were changed for griefing or Trolling while playing online, there should be a world option to change whether or not to show player orientation on the map. My younger siblings are having a very hard time with this, so please fix this as soon as possible. Thank You.
