Died to a Zombie, returned to the area immediately after sleeping in a bed, and gear that could be picked up by mobs was gone. No mobs in sight with any gear on, no dropped gear anywhere near by.
Conclusion; Zombie & other nearby mobs picked up my gear and despawned with it, despite returning in the allotted time.
